GATHER - CONNECT - BE
BURNING MAN 2016
At dawn a shimmering crest rising from the windswept playa breaks the horizon. Like tectonic plates rupturing the earth, staggering upward, it rises to its pinnacle before receding back into the sand. It is a landmark, a reference point, a destination in an otherwise barren landscape. It is a harbor in a harsh sea, providing refuge from the elements. But it is also a terrain to be traversed and maze to be explored; unique places to be inhabited with others as well as in solitude. Its sinuous movement across the playa is a creator of three distinct spaces as well as many other nooks and crannies to be discovered, fostering unexpected interaction between burners, mutant vehicles, and the desert. It is a plaza, it is a campfire, it is a place to lose yourself in another.

At dusk a foreign world emerges. Wind sweeps across its face and soft glowing lights respond, tracking across its surfaces. As wanderers lean against it they begin to notice a green hue emerge from wherever they are resting, they begin to working together to create light for themselves, encouraging others to join.
A mutant vehicle’s base beat is felt in the distance and slowly pink, teal, purple, and yellow lights begin to respond. The lights intensify as the base nears, inviting passers-by to join in a celebration of light and sound. This beacon radiates across the playa calling into the distance.
GATHER - CONNECT - BE
This project embodies the ethos of discovery, of interaction with our surroundings and with each other. Its form is not meant to be understood as an object itself but as an extension of the landscape. It is an echo of the playa and the surrounding mountains, suddenly rising up from the sand only to come crashing back down. In doing so these peaks create new worlds to be discovered, distinct spaces to be inhabited in different ways, ridges to be traverse, all the while fostering community with our fellow explorers. It is a space void of rules that may restrict our behavior while still providing intuitive hints at how each space can be used.
This new landmark is a beacon out on the windswept playa. Not only does this form become a reference point and a destination to be discovered, but it is also a harbor of unrestricted thought and interaction. It is the physical manifestation of our subliminal consciousness in all its facets. Our desire to interact with others, to share ourselves and be valued, as well as our need for solitude. This conceptual beacon summons our rational mind back into the realms of instinct and emotion just as the Burning Man event beckons us from the entrenched reality of the day-to-day.
The spaces of GCB encourage the rational mind to let go by framing these fundamental ways in which we commune in this radical environment of interaction. We gather together, we connect with one another, and we are allowed to become one with ourselves in solitude.
